NATIONAL POLYTECHNICS: Eldoret Polytechnic

Information on National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes and Institutes of Technology (TTIs & ITs).

There are three National Polytechnics in Kenya, namely – Kisumu, Eldoret and Machakos Polytechnics. Kenya and Mombasa Polytechnics have since become constituent colleges of University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology respectively. The national polytechnics, i.e Kisumu, Eldoret and Machakos, examine and award Kenya National Examinations Council Certificates and Diplomas.

The polytechnic teaching staff are Teachers Service Commission employees. Technical Training Institutes and Institutes of Technology are at par in as far as offering of courses is concerned. They both prepare students for examinations at Craft, Certificate, Diploma and Higher Diploma levels examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The courses they offer are not all similar, since some are specific to the institutes. The main difference is in the way they were started. Most of the Technical Training Institutes were secondary schools, which were converted to Technical Training Institutes when the 8-4-4 system of education started. Institutes of Technology were started by communities on harambee basis. They were taken over by the Government and staffed with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) teachers. Technical Training Institutes and the Institutes of Technology are currently under the supervision and control of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. Lecturers are employees of the Teachers Service Commission.
